New Handbook Available for Research Proposal Writing

Are you a young or middle-level scholar who frequently writes proposals for research grants, often with perhaps discouraging results? Or are you a senior scholar (or supervisor) who teaches – or wants to teach – academic courses on proposal writing? If so, a new open-source resource from VREF can be a valuable resource for you.

VREF is pleased to announce the availability of an interactive handbook on academic research proposal writing and project management!

The Handbook has been developed specifically for the VREF community by an experienced team with long experience in writing proposals and managing projects. Both the Handbook and supplementary materials are based on a “Skills&Tools” short course in this area, which was previously offered within the Mobility and Access in African Cities (MAC) program. The materials, which have been developed by Herrie Schalekamp, Ed Campbell, and Edna Odhiambo, include four complementary resources:

  • Student and Educator Handbook: This comprehensive document serves as an excellent starting point for understanding the essentials of research proposal writing.
  • Interactive Educator Handbook: This fillable version is particularly valuable for educators, providing an interactive way to engage with the material.
  • Student Writing Journal: A practical journal designed to assist students in their proposal writing process.
  • Facebook Group Page: A platform to connect with others using these resources, fostering a supportive community.

– This Handbook is a excellent resource for all scholars who are interested in improving their skills in proposal writing and project management, including educators looking for ways to strengthen their expertise in this area. The authors clearly know a lot about the many challenges of proposal writing in particular. The materials are readily accessible, rich with concrete ideas, very engaging (and fun to read, thanks to the humor throughout). You are indeed in good hands as you use and learn from this engaging materials – interactively and at your own pace, says Jane Summerton, prof emer, VREF Scientific Advisor
