VREF are pleased to share the launch of a new project supported by VREF and University College London (UCL). The project will document the ongoing modernization of Mexico City’s popular transport system, with a special focus on microbuses, an essential mode for millions of residents.
The project is led by Daniel Oviedo (UCL) and Fernanda Rivera (UCL)/ former General Director of Public Transport, Mexico City), and forms part of VREF’s Informal and Shared Mobility in the Global South (ISM) programme and the international PRISM initiative.
The work will combine academic research and on-the-ground policy experience to analyze the process of modernization, highlighting governance, user experiences, and gender equity.
Project objectives:
- Document the institutional, social inclusion, and governance challenges of Mexico City’s microbus reforms
- Produce a policy brief (VREF special issue) distilling practical lessons and insight
- Facilitate peer-learning and exchange with PRISM partner cities and actors engaged in similar efforts, including through a VREF Research Forum.
Stay tuned for the first outputs later this year – including a draft policy brief!
