Building capacity on informal public transport in African cities: Government officials’ experiences
Dear colleagues in the VREF community,
We are pleased to invite you to a Research Forum that delves into the critical findings of a new VREF-CODATU discussion paper, on informal public transport (IPT) in Sub-Saharan African cities. This research, conducted by authors Herrie Schalekamp and Sophie-Anne Monplaisir, through interviews with government officials, highlights the challenges and opportunities in building the capacity of government transport institutions in the region.
In recent decades, efforts to improve IPT have often focused on formalizing or displacing these vital services, rather than collaborating with the industry to enhance their offer and integrate them into urban mobility systems. Our study identifies the need for a mindset shift coupled with targeted capacity building initiatives for officials working with IPT to address the unique challenges of this sector.
QUESTIONS IN THE FORUM WILL INCLUDE:
- What are the most effective capacity-building strategies currently in place for IPT in Low- and Middle Income Countries?
- How can we ensure that training programs and other capacity-building initiatives are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of local transport systems?
- What role can local universities,NGOs and international organisations play in fostering collaboration and innovation in capacity building for IPT?
Join us for this opportunity to engage with experts, share insights, and discuss actionable solutions for enhancing the future of informal public transport in the region. We look forward to your participation!
