MAC Research Forum – Planning, governance and financing transport for equitable urban access in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)MAC Research Forum

Dear Colleagues in the MAC community! We are approaching 1 November and our fifth MAC Research Forum this year. We invite you to join us for engaged knowledge exchange and discussions on planning, governance and financing transport for equitable urban access in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Despite increased social science interest in understanding urban mobility governance and financing (institutions, policies, regulations), many gaps in knowledge arguably remain about the dynamics and politics of governance processes in SSA secondary cities in particular. One important topic in this area concerns the role of various stakeholders in influencing (and perhaps improving) policy choices and outcomes.

This Research Forum will explore processes of urban mobility governance and finance, focusing in particular on identifying and analyzing the roles of stakeholders and institutional structures in these processes. Among else, the Forum will discuss the potential for stakeholder participation in non-conventional planning approaches that could strengthen accessibility for vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, PWDs.

BACKGROUND

Since 2021, the VREF Mobility and Access in African Cities (MAC) program has launched a series of virtual seminars under the title VREF MAC Research Forum. The seminars focus on recent or ongoing research in the area of sustainable mobility and equitable access in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) cities.

The purpose of the Research Forum is:
