Equitable Transport Access and Mobility in African Cities: current knowledge and research gaps
This report provides a comprehensive overview of the state of research regarding transport-related equity in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) cities. Commissioned by VREF’s “Mobility & Access in African Cities” (MAC) program, the study serves as a scientific point of departure for developing a targeted research agenda to enhance equitable access for all urban residents.+3
The authors synthesize current knowledge and identify critical research gaps through three interlinked perspectives:
- Universal Access: Examining disparities in reaching essential opportunities like healthcare, education, and workplaces, with a focus on the “Accessibility as Human Capability” approach.+4
- Efficiency: Assessing how the spatial and temporal allocation of transport services impacts the costs and travel experiences of low-income and vulnerable populations.+4
- Health and Safety: Investigating the disproportionate burden of traffic crashes, personal security risks, and environmental hazards such as noise and air pollution.+3
By combining an in-depth literature survey with stakeholder consultations in Accra, Dar es Salaam, and Lomé, the report highlights the need for local insights and adaptive strategies to address the profound spatial and social inequalities inherent in many African transport systems. It is an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners committed to advancing sustainable and inclusive mobility in the region.
