New Walking Cities Lab: Meet the Leadership at Our Launch Webinar on May 29

VREF is proud to announce the official launch of the Walking Cities Lab (WCL), a major new International Research Program (IRP) dedicated to making walking a global transport priority.
Earlier this year, VREF committed 24 MSEK to establish the Walking Cities Lab. This global initiative brings together a consortium of experts to bridge the gap between high-level urban policy and the daily reality for pedestrians, particularly in the Global South.
Following a successful in-person kickoff in Gothenburg this February, we are now inviting the entire VREF community to join us for an Online Launching Webinar to meet the team behind this ambitious four-year program.
Why a Walking Cities Lab?
Walking is the most fundamental mode of transport, yet it is often overlooked in urban planning and infrastructure investment. The WCL will focus on creating actionable knowledge for safer, more inclusive, and climate-resilient walking environments. Through “Urban Living Labs” in Ghana, Brazil, India, and Malta, the program will test real-world interventions and co-create knowledge across strategic areas such as equity, care, and governance.

This event is a unique opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and students across all VREF programs to meet the consortium leadership and learn more about the lab’s vision.
