Dear colleagues in the VREF MAC community! Welcome to join our next online MAC Research Forum, where we will present and discuss two academic “think pieces” on gender-oriented mobility governance and planning in SSA cities.
DATE: Wednesday 24 May 2023 TIME: 11.00 – 13.00 PM GMT REGISTER HERE! |
Many urban transport systems in SSA (and elsewhere) are planned and configured in ways that are inadequate, exclusionary or discriminatory from a gender perspective. It is clear that there remain many barriers to achieving inclusive, gender-informed planning, governance and policy for urban mobility in African cities. More in-depth understanding of these barriers, as well as knowledge-based perspectives on possible ways forward, is urgently needed.
The purpose of this Research Forum is to present and discuss the results of two fresh studies in this area which have been carried out by African scholars with support from VREF. These studies were conducted in response to a call for proposals in February 2022 for reflective, academic “think pieces” on gender-oriented mobility governance and planning in SSA cities.
QUESTIONS WILL INCLUDE:
- What is the current status with regard to gender-informed planning and policy processes within specific urban contexts in SSA?
- What barriers, issues or problems influence the capacity to include, institutionalize and sustain gender dimensions in infrastructural plans, policies and projects?
- What might be possible “ways forward” toward strengthening planning processes and approaches toward more gender-inclusive planning and policy in urban mobility?
