Scholars within the “Mobility & Access in African Cities” (MAC) community are continually engaged in innovative research projects and programs which address various issues that are vital for understanding, analyzing and transforming mobility and access in sub-Saharan African cities.

The purpose of this Research Forum is two-fold. First, we will discuss two large research projects that are currently being carried out in broad international partnerships between scholars in sub-Saharan African universities and their colleagues in European universities. These projects are multidisciplinary, reflecting both state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and strong ambitions to strengthen capacity, skills and exchanges among relevant stakeholders within transport practice and policy. Second, at the Research Forum we will also discuss the process and function of large research projects like these, as well as their long-term implications for African scholarship.

In addition to discussing the two research projects, this Research Forum will address the following questions:What role are large international research projects currently playing on the African academic landscape?Should African scholars be pursuing large research consortia as a sustainable, long-term funding strategy? What are some of the tensions in translating Global North frameworks into our African context in collaboration with EU (or European) partners on EU-funded (or European government funded) projects?

General discussion among all Forum participants

BACKGROUND

Since 2021, the VREF Mobility and Access in African Cities (MAC) programme has carried out a series of on-line seminars under the title “MAC Research Forum.” The seminars focus on recent or ongoing research in the area of sustainable mobility and equitable access in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) cities.

The purpose of the Research Forum is: to stimulate scientific discussion of specific issues/themes related to sustainable urban mobility and equitable access in SSA; to provide an opportunity for MAC researchers to present and discuss their on-going work with research colleagues within the MAC community; to provide a meeting place for dialogue and exchange among researchers and other stakeholders within the MAC community.
